INIB Annual Conference and Honey Show

Saturday 3th November 2012.
The Village Centre, near Downshire Primary School, Ballynahinch Road, Hillsborough.

The Institute of Northern Ireland Beekeepers’ Honey Show took place last Saturday, and once again produced a record entry as the top exhibitors assembled to compete for the various prizes. Despite the poor honey season, the total entry was 168, topping last year’s numbers, with the standard of the exhibits being extremely high. INIB members had just returned from the London Honey Show, and Best in Show went to David McIntyre , whose exhibit of cut comb had won a first prize a week before at London. Another INIB winner from the London Show, was James Houghton of Donegal, who won the 6 Jar class. The Supreme run honey award went to a relatively new beekeeper, the Rev. Stephen Robinson , who won the Novice class, and also the jar for tasting, getting the better of 44 other entries.

As the judging was taking place, the delegates were enthralled by the lectures given by the visiting speakers. Professor Keith Delaplane from the University of Georgia gave two talks on “ Bees as a Super organism”, and” Honey Bee Breeding”, while Ged Marshall a Commercial Master Beekeeper, spoke on “Swarm Control without 9 day checks,” and” Re-queening Why, When and How”.
